And now here's the reason for the Cthulhu covered in salt I posted earlier [link]. I came across this tutorial some time ago [link] and thought it would work well for a Cthulhu idol. I did mine with my standard grey clay and painted it, rather than using black. I had planned on casting this guy but there are some things yet I want to iron out with the technique. The lava effect turned out decently but there were enough issues I wasn't totally pleased with. I'll be doing another and tweaking it a bit for casting.
He's a little guy, about 2 inches tall.

It's adorable - a pocket Cthulhu idol, so you don't need an alter and stone circle to make your daily blood sacrifice. Just knife and go! ;p

The texture is marvleous; it looks very authentic to me.

"Just knife and go," LOL. I'll have to put that in the tagline when I cast/sell these guys. After all, in today's busy, mobile world you don't always have time for the whole ritual!

ahhh... it all makes sense now! I think you're on to a great idea. :)

Thanks! Been looking for some variety in "materials" a Cthulhu idol might be made from. Had an idea for a "scrimshaw" Cthulhu as well.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but would there be any risk of undercuts from the cavities left by the salt?

Probably not. The regular table salt just makes the surface texture, and the deeper pits I made by poking in with a ball-point stylus. I started out using rock salt for those but ultimately the holes it left were too square and didn't look realistic.

That is nice! I can imagin a heavily coroded rusty look made that way might turn out great, to.

Indeed, there's probably all sorts of different things you could use the salt technique for.
